Question of the Day 3.13.24

What movies or TV series have you watched more than 5 times?

New Jack City

Wizard of Oz

The Sound of Music

The Temptations

Grease

New Jack City premiered when I was a teenager.  It’s about New York City organized crime during America’s crack epidemic.  I saw it in the theater about five times.

The Wizard of Oz came on TV regularly when I was growing up.  I watched it annually.

The Temptations is a mini series about the legendary R&B group by the same name.  This film runs on cable channels like VH1 and BET often.

The Sound of Music airs on network TV around Christmas.  I watch this film at least in part every year.

Grease is the classic musical about teenage love.  It is broadcast on cable TV often

Post Script

After posting this I thought about this subject some more. I have more to add to the list

Holiday Heart

Great Balls of Fire

Coal Miners Daughter

Baby Boy

Holiday Heart use to run on BET all the time. BET is the only place I’ve ever seen this film so I’m grateful to them for giving this film a larger audience. Holiday Heart is about a man that worked as a drag queen in a nightclub who helped care for a little girl who had an unreliable mother due to a drug problem. This film is a tear jerker.

Great Balls of Fire use to come on TV all the time but I haven’t seen it in a while. Great Balls of Fire is the story of 1950s performer Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis is an interesting character, was charismatic and the song Great Balls of Fire is super catchy.

I watch Coal Miners Daughter whenever I catch it on TV. It’s the life story of Loretta Lynn who grew up in a large, poor family was a child bride and became a country music legend. Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her work in this film.

Baby Boy is about a young man from Los Angeles and his dramatic relationships with family and friends. This film was released in 2001 and has a cast of actors that have have successful careers in Hollywood such as Ving Rhames(also in Holiday Heart), Taraji P Henson, Snoop Dogg and Tyrese Gibson. Baby Boy ran on BET on weekends for years. (BET aired about ten movies in rotation for a decade or more. The same few consistently. I’m not kidding. That was the extent to a lot of their programming. It’s almost as if viewers were forced to watch these movies. I wrote them an e mail once and complained. I’m glad a few of the films were actually good.) I really enjoy Baby Boy. The internal conflicts of the main character are kind of Shakespearean to me.
