I recently watched a documentary called “The You Tube Effect”. The film was written and directed by Alex Winter. Alex Winter is most well known as Bill from the 80s buddy film “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and it’s sequels. “The You Tube Effect” discusses the history of the video sharing app You Tube which hit the internet in 2005. The world hasn’t been the same since.

The title of the film is straightforward. It’s about the effect of the app on pop culture, politics and society. Well known You Tubers are interviewed about their experiences and opinions about the app. The film discussed recent current events like the pandemic and the American 2020 presidential election and the part You Tube played in both.

It’s an interesting film and I enjoyed it. YT has been my hobby for a long time. It’s been very interesting to watch it evolve. I hope more documentaries will be written on You Tube and it’s influence. “The You Tube Effect” covers mainstream content creators and events. It would be interesting if a documentary was made on a specific topic or a niche audience.
