Three Day Weekend Review: Klimt

“The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt is one of my favorite paintings. It’s passionate, romantic and imaginative. I watched the 2006 film “Klimt” over the holiday weekend. I enjoyed the film to an extent but it was a little dull and hard to follow. I am biased because I am an admirer of “The Kiss” and I enjoy John Malkovich. He was sexy in this role.

The film takes place in art community of Vienna, Austria in the early 1900s. The culture of this community is promiscuous and rebellious. Klimt was temperamental and had a potty mouth. Klimt had fourteen children with various lovers. He was the NBA Youngboy of the European art scene at the turn of the twentieth century.

I would recommend this film if you’re interested in art history or a fan of John Malkovich. “Klimt” does not focus on creating the artwork. There is more of a focus on the business aspect of being an artist. “Klimt” is an overview of the artist’s life and times but doesn’t get very specific. It’s like we’re a fly on the wall of his life within the same time and space.

The movie is short by current standards so it’s not a big investment if you don’t like it. If you’re interested in Klimt’s work you might enjoy this video even more than the film.
