There is a lack of empathy for Black women. People fail to recognize Black women’s humanity. It’s historic and global. I ran across this short on You Tube. It’s a video from Sao Paulo, Brazil of a deranged woman that held another woman hostage while she waited on a bus.
The hostage’s situation was turned into a joke by @Quickleep, the account that posted it. There were many comments that laughed at this matter and the victim’s stoic response to having a knife at her neck. They laughed that she was unbothered, unimpressed, bored, had other things on her mind and could probably handle the matter herself. I think she was trying to not agitate the woman that was yelling with a knife at her neck.
An old lady waiting on a bus and being held hostage by a woman with a knife is not funny. It’s very sad and I’m sure the hostage was terrified. Most of the viewers of this video projected their stereotypes into this situation. Their preconceived notions of Black women wouldn’t allow them to have any sympathy towards this old woman.
If the woman with the knife did the same thing to a dog these people would not have reacted with laughing emojis and jokes. I want to point out that there were Black men and women laughing and making jokes too. This woman should have reminded them of their own mothers, grandmothers and aunts. They are either complete dingbats or they have no respect for elder women. Either way they come across as fools that can’t be taken seriously. (I’ve noticed on social media that younger Black people like to make older Black people into a joke or the focus of disdain.)
Shame on @Quickleep and everyone that laughed at this dark and dangerous situation.
