You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?
It all started on a brutally cold but sunny morning. There was a fresh dusting of snow on the ground that fell on the city over night. The sunshine reflected on the snow to create a bright, blinding light.
It was the peak of bitter, upper midwestern winter cold. It was the peak of the disco era. It was the peak of American automobile manufacturing in Detroit, The Motor City, also known as the Murder Capital of the World at the time. It was the cusp of Black American prosperity and opportunity. In comparison to the sharecropping family mom grew up in the winter baby’s future was full of promise.
