End of an Era: Forever 21 is Closing

Forever 21 is going out of business. It’s the end of an era. I absolutely loved shopping malls in my younger years. Forever 21 has been a mall staple and anchor for decades. The retailer was started in LA, during the 80s by a married couple that immigrated from Korea. The company spread and across the US and became a retail juggernaut. The empire was started with $11k in savings.

I have shopped with Forever 21 many, many times. F21 was rarely the purpose for my visit to the mall but I always browsed the shop when I went to the mall. F21 was great for accessories, social wear and swim suits. They were a great place for “going out tops” in the 00s. It’s been a few years since I made a purchase with the retailer but hey I’m fifty. I had to let it go for the sake of personal growth.

Forever 21 was cheap, trendy, audibly loud, gaudy and messy. Stepping inside of Forever 21 was sensory overload but I enjoyed it. At one point they put Bible verses on the bottom of their shopping bags. This is ironic considering that I once purchased the shortest skirt in the world there. Modesty was not a strong suit of F21.

I never had the nerve to wear the skirt in public. I couldn’t sit down in it and have my behind covered. At one point Forever 21 sold baby ts with Bible verses written across the chest. They were running a thot ministry and I bet some party girls found their way to salvation because of them.

Something about F21 resonated with me as it obviously did with many others. The executives always kept fashion conscious customers with a limited budget that liked to be on trend in mind. They have been sued by high end designers for copying designs. They took a hit for us. God bless them and thanks for the memories. Forever 21 was a fun part of my life for a long time.
