NBA viewership is down. I can think of a few reasons why but I think I know the number one reason why ratings have declined. It’s pretty obvious but the media is never going to discuss it.
The number one reason the NBA is losing viewers is because it’s hard to find a game. I live in Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City does not have an NBA team so I adopted the Oklahoma City Thunder. Thunder games come, or perhaps came, it’s hard to know, on the Bally Sports channel that comes with my cable package. I use to watch the Thunder on Bally Sports but they have been hard to catch up with despite the Playoffs approaching. The Thunder are in the number one spot in the Western Conference.
I looked up information about where I can watch the Thunder. Some games are blacked out in the local market? I don’t know if Kansas City is considered local. NBA games are available on streaming services and aps. I use to pay for a streaming service called Sling but I cancelled it after the end of the NBA season last year. I liked Sling but it got expensive and I’m not sure NBA basketball is worth it.
When I was growing up in Detroit NBA games use to come on a local TV station. There was no additional charge. The Pistons were there nearly every night from October to May whether you were interested in watching them or not. They were consistent and reliable.
It should make sense to the highly paid business and marketing executives of the NBA that restricting their product, creating confusion on how to find it and adding fees to watch would cause a decrease in viewership. It’s not that hard to figure all this out. DUH!
